As World War I rages, the call goes out for Germany's youth to serve the Fatherland. Paul Baumer is just 19 years old when he and his classmates enlist. They enter the war with high ideals but leave it disillusioned or dead. In a single battle Paul and his company of 150 men are reduced to a shattered group of 32 survivors. As Paul struggles with whom he has become, and the inscrutable world to which he must return, he is led like a ghost into the war's final hours.
